PATRON SERVICES LIBRARIAN

Seeking a Public Services Librarian- Open until January 19, 2019

We are looking for a Patron Services Librarian with solid knowledge and experience in adult and youth resources and programming with advanced computer/technology skills to help us create new and exciting programming for our community.

Our system has three service locations: a main branch, one 35 hour a week branch and one 10 hour a week service outlet. The system employs 20 full and part-time employees and has an annual operating budget of $1.3 million.

This position reports to the Public Services Coordinator and is primarily responsible for Children’s, Teen and Adult programming for all locations of the Newton County Library System.

This position requires a Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited university; mandatory Librarian's Professional Graduate Certificate (5B) from the Georgia Certification Board with a minimum two (2) years of professional experience in library services.

DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Public Services Coordinator, this position is primarily responsible for Children’s, Teen and Adult programming for all locations of the Newton County Library System.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Works with Public Services Coordinator and Branch Managers to coordinate and facilitate Youth Services and Adult programming.
  • Assists/instructs adult and children in their use of print, online databases, and other specialized reference tools.
  • Conducts library tours as requested for groups of all ages. (school groups, day-care, senior etc.)
  • Create library displays.
  • Works with Public Services Coordinator to schedule Children’s performers for annual Summer Reading, Winter Reading and Library Festival programs.
  • Ensures ongoing collection development and maintenance of print, audio-visual, and electronic resources for Children’s and Teen collection.
  • Ensures effective exchange of communication among departments and between libraries concerning Children’s programming and collection needs.
  • Works patron services desk as required.
  • Ensures that daily statistics and cash reports are accurately prepared.
  • Submits required reports to Administration in a timely fashion.
  • Participates in long-range planning.
  • Routine tasks and projects are done with minimum supervision.


EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school, required
  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional library experience in positions with progressive levels of responsibility.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Knowledge and experience using ILS systems, online databases and current technology.
  • Knowledge of children’s and adult print and electronic resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order.
  • Ability to handle patron interactions and resolve them in a professional manner
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations and library policies.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Georgia State Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain a current Georgia Librarian Grade 5 certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods and operate standard office equipment, daily.
  • Travel by automobile is required.
  • Ability to lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds, daily.
  • Ability to push book trucks with up to 100 pounds of materials, daily.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, daily.
  • Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, climbing and squatting, daily.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Majority of work performed in general office/library environment.
  • Requires travel between NCLS locations and community events as needed.
  • Requires availability for extended hours as needed.
  • Requires a combination of weekdays, nights and weekend hours as needed.
  • Requires periodic participation and attendance at professional events and training.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent people/interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of library information sources and materials.
  • Basic knowledge of computers, ILS systems and basic office equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Salary Range is $46,586.25 - $52,000, based on qualifications and experience.
